THE PRICE OF BUTTER
Wellington, April 3. Questioned how long the butter subsidy of 3d per lb. would be continued, the Prime Minister said definitely that it was a temporary arrangement to carry them over the time taken by the negotiations now in progress.
It is stated that every pound that could be raised was sent into grading stores on the Imperial Government account, in order to obtain the high price of 280 s per cwt., which arrangement ended on March 31st. Some markets are thus left bare of supplies; lienee the necessity for drawing on the Imperial stocks awaiting shipment. This also accounts for the subsidy being paid.
In connection with the price of butter, the producers’ representatives arc to meet in Palmerston X. aud Auckland this week, and the Government propose, after hearing tne result of these meetings, to go further into the matter, with a view to announcing the prices that should obtain during (lie coming winter.
