FALSE FIRE ALARM

The lire syren’s shrill screech alarmed townspeople at about a quarter to eight o’clock last night, and a bright glare was noticed at the rear of the Presbyterian Church. Sparks and flames shot skyward, and people had visions of another disastrous' fire in Main Street. A crowd soon assembled, and the chemical engine made its appearance and proceeded to the scene. General relief was expressed when the source of the outbreak, some rubbish, was discovered. On making investigations from the captain of the brigade, we were informed that the affair was arranged as a rally for the brigade, and that public notification was overlooked.

We hope, in future, that the public will be forewarned of any false alarms, as such scares, while contrary to the Police Oflences Act and the borough by-laws, have a very bad effect upon the nerves of people, which may lead to serious consoquonces.
