SCOW ASHORE
AT WELLINGTON HEADS. CREW LAND SAFELY. Wellington, March 27. While heating up the harbour, the auxiliary scow .Magic, from North Cape to Wellington, with a cargo of ...tone and some wool, went ashore on Inconstant Point, inside the Wellington Heads. A northerly gale was blowing at the time, and a very heavy sea was running inside. The crew, consisting of Captain Mclntosh (master), Morris (engineer), Barker, Carmichael, Brett and Balcomb, landed safely at Penearrow in a boat.
When the crew got ashore below Pencarrow they were looked after by the lighthouse men, and are now little the worse for their experience. The. vessel could not make headway against the heavy gale, and was dashed on the rocks. To-day she was badly pounded, but the gale lias subsided, and the wind has not changed, as anticipated. Had it done so, the little vessel would have been smashed to kindling wood. It is now in a parlous condition, but if the weather remains favourable there is a probability of her being hauled off. The vessel is owned by the Hansford Mills Construction Company of Wellington. Portions of the deck, and some of the wool, have been washed ashore. Wellington, March 28. An attempt was made this morning to refloat the Magic, which went ashore at Pencarrow on Saturday. The attempt was unsuccessful, but another attempt will be made to-night.
