ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Auckland, March 20. Arthur Holland, aged 16J years, the son of a farmer at Kimihia, was thrown from a horse and killed instantaneously. Christchurch, March 20. Frederick Dent, who was crushed between two whares vvliilc working oil a thrashing plant at Springbank, died on Thursday. Deceased, whose parents reside in Dunedin, was a returned soldier, having served in France. At an inquest the jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death by being crushed between wlmrc and a cookhouse on J. Matthews’ threshing plant, through the coupling of a combine breaking when .going up an incline at Springbauk, causing the ■combine to run back on to the cookhouse, and that deceased, in endeavouring to jump clear, received injuries which caused his death. No blame was attached to anyone. Christchurch, March 20.
David Nicholson, aged 60, jumped off the New Brighton pier on Thursday evening. The body was found about two hours later. Deceased was rescued from the* sea at Sumner about a fortnight ago, after he had apparently fallen into the sea from the Sumner jetty. At an inquest a verdict was returned of suicide by drowning. Invercargill, March 26. At the inquest on Lachlan Russell Fraser, aged 22, who was drowned as the result of the swamping of a boat at the Queenstown Regatta, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Coroner commended the effort of rescue by Messrs Roach and M’Donald.
