MAYOR’S HONORARIUM
IX referring to the Palmerston Borough Council's unanimous decision to increase its Mayor's honorarium from £2OO lo £250, we commented that our own Mayor's allowance was only £SO. We were in error. The Town Clerk informs us that the .-uni is £25 per annum. Well, this makes the comparison more odious. We do not, of course, advocate salaried Mayors and Councillors, because such innovation would probably lead to professional quackery and other undesirable practices inimical lo good civic government, but we do believe that the occupier of the civic chair should receive at least sufficient to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses during his period of oflice, and £SO is little enough as the minimum in a borough of this size. We hope the Council will move in this connection when fixing the estimates for next veil r.
