THE CENSUS
On Sunday, 17th April; housholders of New Zealand will have a task which most 01. them v#ill agree comes quite often enough, though it is only once in five years. They arc lo (ill in the Census return—a formidable schedule crowded with inquiries as to the personal affairs of everyone in the house, from the Onj a thus supplied the Government. Statistician will compile a volume of tables which will give—not at a glance, but as the reward of careful study —a very complete picture of the structure of New Zealand s population. For the first time in history the Census of the whole of the British Empire is being taken as nearly simultaneously as possible; and, roughly speaking, the schedules in all parts of the Enipiie will ask the same questions, so that ultimately very close comparisons can he made hot ween the various populations under the British Hag. The statistics thus obtained will he specially interesting in respect to 111,, presence, status, and increase or otherwise of foreign elements.
