(To the Editor.)
Sir. —Can you tell the public why the Foxton business people are not closing their shops from Thursday night till Tuesday morning, the same as is being done in most other places during Easter holidays. To come back to work on Saturday prevents employees from spending a few days out of town. 1 believe only one employer was against closing on Saturday, 'and all the rest were compelled to follow suit. I do not think the public would be inconvenienced by closing on Saturday, from what I have heard, and even now it is not 100 late to reconsider the question and fall into line with other towns. —Yours, etc., EMPLOYEE. [WE referred the above to the local president of the Retailers’ Association (Mr W. D. Bauckham), and he states: —“At the meeting of the Retailers' Association on Wednesday, 2nd inst., it was considered, after some discussion, inadvisable, to close from Thursday night to Tuesday morning, and unanimously decided to open on Saturday. The meeting was not a large one, but had any who were not present wished to close on Saturday they would surely have endeavoured to ho there. We do not wait to see what other towns do before we decide our course. As to Palmerston. Saturday is now observed qs the half-holiday, and hence it was not likely they would open on Saturday for a few hours. We gave an extra half-holiday on.the occasion of the school picnic.”
