SCHOOL PICNIC.

The weather was very threatening early yesterday morning for the school excursion and picnic at Ashhurst, but cleared before the train left. Upwards of 600 scholars and parents and adults availed themselves of the outing. Although some of the carriages were overcrowded this did not interfere with the enjoyment of the train journey. Upon arrival at the Ashhurst Domain no time was lost in providing refreshments for all. Sports of various kinds were indulged in, not the least interesting of which was a baby show in two sections, for babies up to nine months, and over that age and not exceeding eighteen months. Mr Thos. Henderson, a great-grandfather, faced the ordeal of judging in both sections, and carried out his .duties to the satisfaction of the onlookers, if not to the mothers. Mr Geo. Coley, who was nominated as one of the judges, refused duty. As the judge took each baby in his arms and saluted it with a kiss there was tremendous cheering, and further cheers wore given for the mothers —who, it was suggested, should have beffn similarly honoured by the gallant judge. Committeemen, teaching staff, and other willing helpers kept the children amused throughout the day: The Salvation Army Baud, assisted by Messrs Betty, Ebbett and Osborne, enlivened the proceedings with musical items. The catering was in the efficient hands of Mrs Walls, and the youngsters had all they wanted to appease their voracious appetites. Fruit and lollies were also distributed at intervals, Parties wended their way to the Manawatu Gorge, and witnessed the scene of the motor accident in that locality. There was not a hitch of any kind to mar the days’ outing, and all returned to their homes tired but happy. The following are the results of the various events:— Baby Show. —Under nine months: Mrs Staff 1, Mrs Nelson 2, Mrs Dix 3, 4.
