The Justice Department wrote, forwarding the sum of £9 10s as fines collected under the County bylaws. —Received. The Commissioner of Taxes wrote detailing particulars of the procedure to be followed in connection with the collection of income tax on the interest on debentures issued by local authorities. —Received. The Valuer-General forwarded an account for revising the valuation roll.—Received. The Department of Public Health forwarded a letter, outlining particulars of the health inspector’s salary, and notifying that the Council’s share would be £7t> per annum. —Received. The Wellington Harbour Board notified the Council of the election of representatives to the Board in April next. —Received. Mr J. W. Robinson, Foxton, wrote asking that the culvert at Bluegum corner be attended to. —Engineer to deal with matter. The manager of the Westport Coal Company wrote expressing regret that owing to the trouble on the waterfront, he could not say when further supplies of coal would be available. —Received. TRANSFERS.

The following alterations were made in the rate roll: —E. A. Barton to G. H. Kingdom, W. J. Honore to Hogg Bros., W. Darragh to J. H. W. Clausen, W. Burne to Manawatu County Council, Poplar Mill Co. to Manawatu County Council, A. Lancaster to L. A. Lancaster, A. E. Buxton to E. W. Haycock, V. B. V. Pearce to A. M. Gray. WORKING OF TRAMWAY.

The tramway manager reported that during the past month the chief items of traffic were: Merchandise flfij tons, cheese and butter 177 A tons, grass seed 13(31 tons, sheep 01 trucks, timber 34,000 superficial feet. Fares amounted to £5 2s Bd. Accounts showed a debit balance of £72 10s 6d for the month’s working. The expenditure included items of £23 18s for fishplates and £73 5s 2d for repairs to truck wheels. The railway district engineer had called at the office with reference to the 2811). track. The difficulty experienced by the Council in obtaining rails was explained to the engineer, who stated that the relaying of 40 lb. rails would have to be pushed on as soon as possible. In discussing the report ■ the chairman stated that the Council had endeavoured to purchase rails in Melbourne, but negotiations had proved fruitless. He thought it' would be wise to advertise for 100 tons of rails. —Agreed to. The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer reported that in the Awahou riding Mr 11. Coley had delivered metal on the Whirokino road for the sum of 0s per load. Mr C. Petersen was delivering metal on the Shannon road for the sum of 17s per yard. The report concluded with details of the business conducted at the recent conference of engineers,, which Was held in Christchurch. At the conference the engineer had learned much in a general way which would be of value to the county. He had gone into the question of handling metal by motor lorry. During the past month 42 yards of metal bad been carted a distance of 15 miles, and the cost worked out at 7d per mile per yard for the lorry, as against OSd with a horse team.
