ASLEEP AT HIS POST.
DRIVER DISMISSED FROAI SERVICE.
The driver of the north-bound Main Trunk express which, on 17th February, dashed past the southbound express at full speed just as the latter had drawn into the platform at Hunterville, has been dismissed from the service. The driver was asleep at the time of the incident. No information is to hand as to the position of the fireman in the matter.
In a statement ipade on the 18th February it was explained that a head-on collision was most narrowly avoided. Each express was travelling at a speed of between 35 and 40 miles an hour. There were some 400 passengers on the up train, and 200 on the down train. It was officially stated at the time by the Department that the driver of the north-bound train had finished work at 0.50 p.m. on the Tuesday, and did not start work ngnift until 7 p.m. on the AYednesdav —an interval of at least 24 hours.
