AFFORESTATION.
A TESTATOR’S REQUEST
As the result of an afforestation conference held in Palmerston K.. •last month, a deputation waited on Mr Massey and laid before him the following resolution carried by thl conference: —“That this conference strongly affirms the fact that tho sand dune areas on the M ost Coast of this Island should be afforested, and urges the Government to make an annual grant of £I,OOO for five years, for the purpose of enabling an experimental station to be set up by the Forestry Departmelit for demonstration purposes.”
Mr G. L. Marshall (Marten), who was a member of the deputation, reported on the outcome to a meeting of the provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union at Marten on Saturday. lie stated that "Mr Massey had given them a sympathetic hearing, but had stated that at the present time every halfpenny was wanted. However, lie promised to submit the matter to Cabinet ajul to the Forestry Department, and if tho latter had any money to spare it would be allocated as desired. Mr Marshall observed that lie was not hopeful of Government action under present conditions, but added that another scheme had come under his, notice. The trustees of the estate of the late Mr Robert Bruce had a sum of money in hand left by deceased for that very purpose. As yet nothing had been done with it, and be would move that the trustees be approached with the idea of having the money, or a portion of it, expended in the direction indicated at the conference in Palmerston North. This was agreed to.
