A BANK ROBBERY.
OVER £2,000 STOLEN.
TELLER BOUND AND GAGGED,
Advice has been received by the police that the Murchison branch of the Bank of New Zealand was robbed at 3 a.in. to-day. 3he teller, Mr W. Engall, sleeps on the bank premises, and be was found bound and gagged. The keys of the safe had been obtained, and a sum of £2,085 10s had been stolen. 1 Nelson, Feb. 23.
Several police officers and detectives are investigating the Murchison bank robbery, so far without result.
The teller, Mr Wilfred Engall, says he was bound and gagged about 2 or 3 o ? clock on Tuesday morning. About 7 o’clock, when he was able to free himself, he found the bank had been robbed. Two men were engaged' in the affair. They got clear away after securing the teller’s keys and ransacking the safe, taking oyer £2,000.
There are several rumours, but nothing has been definitely fixed upon. It is not yet clear how the premises were forced open or entered.
This occurrence has caused quite a sensation at Murchison, it took place when there were many visitors in the township attending a Chautauqua concert.
