COST OF FOOD.

AN INCREASE FOR DECEMBER

The Government Statistician reports that the index figure for the three food groups—groceries, dairy produce, and meat —for the month of December is 1015, an increase ol 28 points as compared with the previous month’s figures, and an increase of 78.07 per cent, as compared with July, 1014. The increase is mainly accounted for by the 40 points advance in the groceries group, due to the annually recurring increase in the price of potatoes when the new season’s crop comes in.

It is shown that the amount required during December last to purchase the amount of food that would have cost £1 on the average for the four centres during the years 1000-13 is as follows:s. d. Auckland 37 21 Wellington • • 37 10 Christchurch ...... 38 7'i Dunedin 38 01Average 38 0| The average for September, 1020, for the four centres was 36s 7d, and for December, 1010, 32s B,}d. Put in another way, the £1 of July, 1014, was worth on the average for the four centres in the purchase of food Us 3d at 31st December last.
