VALEDICTORY.

Air J. A. COOGAN

There was a large and represent - ative gathering at the Druid’s Hall on Friday night (says the Patea Press), when occasion was taken to bid farewell to Mr J. A. Coogan, who is leaving with his family for Foxton, where f he will reside in future.

Art* M. Carey presided over the gathering, and a pleasant evening was spent in song and story.

During the proceedings Mr C. M. Strouts, manager of the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales, on behalf of the gathering, presented Air Coogan with a silver lla.sk and cigarette ease, and a silver epergne for Mrs Coogan.

In making the presentation, Air Strouts made eulogistic reference to Mr Coogan’s many good qualities, which had earned for him the esteem of one and all. Mr Coogan, Air Strouts declared, was a progressive settler, and one that the town could ill afford to lose. On holuill. of his many friends in the town and district he wished both himself and Mrs Coogan and family every happiness and prosperity in the future. Mr Coogan, in a brief speech, thanked Air Strouts for his kind remarks, and the donors for their handsome presents. He was sorry to leave Patea, hut would always have the happiest recollections ot the tfiwn and its people. lie hoped that any Patea people visiting Foxton would be sure to look him up. On behalf of Mrs Coogan and himself he again thanked them for their gifts and good wishes. The gathering broke iip shortly after 10 p.m., after singing “Auld Lang Syne,” and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
