RIVER CONTROL.
THERE are several river or drainage boards having jurisdiction over ilit* lloodable area of the Manawatu and Oroua rivers, between Palmerston and Motiloa. The Kairanga County Council at its lasi meeting discussed the proposed formation of a new drainage board to operate between Awahuri and Foxton, and it was incidentally mentioned that certain bunking operations in progress would detrimentally effect other lands, and a resolution was carried to the effect “that the attention of the Minister of Public Works lie drawn to the erection of banks on the southern side of the Manawatu River, and of the danger which would probably be caused to the county as Ihe result of Hoods.” Surely the time has arrived to deal in a comprehensive way with the control of the Manawatu River from the Gorge to the sea by the constitution of a representative Board. The present local methods ol dealing with the Hooded ureas is only tinkering with the problems, and will ultimately lend to litigation
and loss. Representatives of local bodies throughout the area should gel together and agree to one controlling body and one big scheme, and see il through. A. representative conference should lie convened to discuss the subject, and the present parochial tinkering methods abandoned.
