Christchurch, Last Night

The seriousness of any attempt to bribe a public officer, ill order to induce him to neglect his duty, was stressed by Air McCarthy, S.AL, at the Lyttelton Alagistrate’s Court ibis morning, when John Rea, licensee of the Saxon Hotel, was charged with offering a bribe on December 26th to a constable. Air Barrett, on behalf of accused, pleaded guilty. Rea was suddenly caught snplpying a. man with liquor at a time when the hotel should have been closed. AY hen accosted by the constable regarding the offence, ho had made the offer. Accused was convicted and fined the nominal sum of £l.
