FOXTON RACES.
ANNIVERSARY DAY AND MONDA Y NEXT.
The .annual race meeting of ihc Foxton Racing Club will open on Saturday next (Anniversary Day), and be concluded on Monday, 24th January. Excellent nominations were received, grid most of the horses handicapped were accepted for. In two races —the Maiden Race and Awalum Hack Welter — every horse nominated was accepted for, and only three or four were allowed to drop out of the remaining six races, which must be considered a fluttering tribute to the work of Mr J. Henrys. The class of horses engaged is of a very even character, and investors will, need to don their thinking caps to select the dividend payers. The Club is exceptionally fortunate in having a natural grandstand formation for both outside and inside patrons, and the shelter trees afford a splendid camping ground for picnic parties, The recent rains have greatly improved the racing tracks, and some rust times should lie registered. Since its last meeting the Club has installed a set of Hutcliman’s jockeys’ scales (which are undoubtedly the best on the market), and riders will be able to register their weights' expeditiously. Secretary Freeman has hjid a busy time in arranging for accommodation for both
trainers and horses, but every detail has now been arranged, and visiting owners and trainers can rely on their wants being attended lo without any undue delay. The services of the Marton Municipal Band have been engaged, and as this combination has improved considerably of late, a first-class programme of music can be expected. In addition to playing at the Races, the Band will give an open-air concert at Manawatu Heads on Sunday afternoon, and also in the Town Hall on Simdiiv evening. The Band will be assisted by several local vocal stars al the conecrl, and also Mr H. Sherri IT and Miss Gammon from Marlon. Messrs Langley Bros ,are in charge of the catering, and Mr 11. [). Baker, of Palmerston North, of the publican’s booth. Special trains, leaving 1 Palmerston N.„ at 9.30 , and 10.5 a.m,, will
arrive in ample time to allow visitors to witness the first race. The return train for Palmerston and Feilding will leave the racecourse at 5.40 p.rn., and the Sanson tram at b p.m.
Racing starts at 1 L. 30 a.m., with the Hack Hurdles, of lj miles, for which eleven have accepted. Hauls wn is I«']> weight, with 10.8, and on lii> Mnimwatu and Marton performances it looks as if his rider will salute the judge. Sail Home and Dick may till the places. The distance will probably prove too far for Vigiin. A field of fourteen have paid up for the Himitangi Hack, and the three top weights, Yankee Dan, Beloved and Celinisia, may find most favour with the public. American Beauty has noi shown the pace in tier last few races as earlier in the season. Pirn Pirn and Mar Baby -are a eimmstcnl: pair. The lightweight division is of a very even order, and Cay Patron may create a surprise, but Celmisia looks the pick of the field. The Foxton Cup has a field of ten acceptor.-. Molyneaux holds pride of pu.-ition, with 9.0. and is sure to be the public’s first selection. Scornful and Gxucelle 7.13, arc a pair that should lie well suited on iho Foxton course. Bonny Briar has not yet gone the distance, and may lie reserved for the Anniversary Handicap. This will he Flight Commander's first appearance in open company, and can he relied upon to run a sterling race. Borealis (if started) should give a good account, whilst Simon appears to be the best of the light-weights — M'arrawee, Miss Love and Ladify. The latter is a sure starter, and lias been running very consistently in the South Island at the holiday meetings. Molyneaux, Scornful and Borealis should produce an interesting finish.
The fwentv-one horse.-' nominated in the Maiden Race, have accepted, and on form il looks as if Kuia, Mis.- Kivu, and Princess Marion will be in the lighting line' at Hie finish.
In tlio Awaliou 'Welter the seventeen horses handicapped were paid up for, and a good race should result between Merry Queen, Sweet Song and Californian. In the Anniversary Handicap Crueelle and Bonnv Briar claim previous engagements, but the latter may start in this race, and the former in the Cup. W aimatoa is top weight, with 9.6, but does not appear*to have struck form. Rouen has been very sore since the Manawatu meeting, otherwise it would not be necessary to look any further for the winner. Eginont Park is a genuine sort, and is always appearing on the scene when least expected. Barleycorns efforts in the hack division have been meritorious, and with 7.S should he handy at the finish. Gold Problem may be reserved for t lie Herrington Welter, and Lady General lias been off the winning list for such a time that it would he a surprise packet if she won. On recent form a formidable trio is Bonny Briar, Egmont Park and Barleycorn. Of -the fifteen handicapped in the Marotiri Hack, only two have dropped out, which should .provide a good betting race. The first four—Minsk, ■ Beloved, Hallowroz and Gallia —are undoubtedly the pick of the field, and the two latter may be expected to tight out a great finish. The conducting event on the first day is the Herrington Welter, but most of tbo horses claim other en-
gag-omen ts. On Marton form, Sir Fanciful should start favourite, and if Vfarrawee is reserved for this race the above brace should make tilings interesting, although Miss Love and Namur will be suited by the distance. .
There are 92 horses competing at the local meeting on Saturday and Monday. Mr Raynor’s team of six horses arrived from Waverley last night. In order to make accommodation provision for the influx of visitors expected at the week-end, the Marton and Eangitikei clubs have loaned the local club a quantity of beds and bedding. The sale of Flight Commander recently reported did not eventuate, and the horse will race in the Foxton Cup in the colours of Mr Ken. Duncan. All Talk and General Raven are coming through from Hastings to take part in the second day's meeting. • Mrs ML Kirkland has donated a handsome jockey’s whip to he presented to the winning jockey in the Foxton Cup. At the conclusion of the Maiden Race flic bay mare Marzialc (Advance —Sou' Wester marc) will he sold by auction, on account of Mr Janies Gavey.
