TAXI-LICENSE FEES.

At Monday night’s Council meeting' Cr. Rand said lie had been informed (hat motor licenses had been issued bv the Town Clerk at reduced fees to enable motor lorries to ply for hire to the seaside.. He said the faxi-cab proprietors objected to any reduced fee when they had to pay an anniKil license. $

The Town Clerk said there was nothing to prevent any one I nun taking out a license which could lie used for a day or a month' for ss. The annual fee was £1 as from January Ist. In the past outsiders who had plied for hire locally at holiday time had not been called upon to pay a temporary license fee, but now they were called upon to do -o. The by-law provided that a license fee tenable for one month could be procured on payment of ss. If this form of license was taken out the payment would be three times in excess of the annual fee. On a recent holiday many visitors who arrived by train to proceed to the local seaside would have been greatly inconvenienced had it- not been for outside conveyances, as the local taxi-cabs were engaged in other trips. The license fee had been collected from them. He said there had been a good deal of' feeling by taxi-proprietors against the intrusion of “foreign” competition.
