PROPOSED WOODEN BUILDINGS IN BRICK AREA.
— —<► COUNCIL’S PROTEST TO WAY DEPARTMENT. ' , ' J '
The Railway Department own two valuable sections in Main Street, one between the post office and Mr Desmond's shop, and the oilier at the corner of Main and Wharf Streets, the old posi office site. It is proposed to erect dwellings on these sites in wood for railway employees, contrary to the borough bylaws, which provide that such buildings shall he erected in brick or concrete. The local Chamber of Commerce forwarded a letter of protest to the Council against the action of the Government, and suggested that dwellings should he erected on the railway reserve at the south end of Hie town, leaving the sites in Main Street for business purposes or public buildings. The matter came up for discussion at last night’s Borough Council meeting, when the Mayor moved, and Cr. Coley seconded, the following resolution: — “That this Council desires to enter an emphatic protest against the erection of wooden dwellings in the brick area, contrary m the by-laws, and that the Minister for Railways and Mr Newman, M.P., he communicated with, and asked to favourably consider changing lbe site of these proposed dwellings io a locality outside the brick area; and that it lie pointed out . that building sit on in Main Street are ol: great commercial value. The Council is of the opinion that if these sites were realised on the money so obtained would be nearly sufficient to purchase sections and erect dwellings in the residential area of the town; and that a petition be prepared and left at the town t-lorks office for signature by ratepayers and residents.” The motion was carried unanimously.
