RUBBISH REMOVAI
The Clerk reported that only one application had been received for rubbish removal in the brick area, but on Saturday, when the scheme was put in operation, and the < - art went up the street, there was nothing doing. >.
A communication from the Chamber of Commerce, asking that the scheme be applied to the whole borough, was also read. Cr. Coley said that to purchase a vehicle for this purpose would '-ost Cl (Ml. The Council had made arrangements for rubbish removal, and the only response was for a sixpenny load, which was not pul out for removal.
Cr. Thompson said it was no use wasting time on the Chambers letter, which should he laid on the table.
It was pointed out that those who were agitating for rubbish removal did not avail themselves oi the sor-
The Mayor said he did not think rubbish such as tins and paper wore a menace to the health of the comn.unilv. which could be disposed of by residents. However, if a horse and cart were required for a borough service it would mean striking a rate. He thought they should concentra to on the wafer and drainage scheme. If the present, scheme was not supported it, would be abandoned.
Cr. Coley said some people would object to have their rubbish carted a wav for nothing.
Cr Bryant: They would place a value on it as manure. On the Mayor's motion it was resolved: That the Chamber (Hi Commerce be notilied that unless more support is extended to the scheme the question of extending or continuing the system cannot, he •considered. APPLICATION! FOR PURCHASE OF PINE TREES. Messrs Tlarvoy and Co., of Levin, wrote, offering to purchase pittas iiisignus trees on a royalty basis ol 2s per 10(1 ft. after deducting 25 per cent, for bark and saw waste.
Tht' Mayor moved that .Messrs Harvey and Co. he informed that the Couneil has no,desire to dispose of any timber at present, hut that public notice will he given in the event of it so doing. The gas works stoker wrote, drawing the Council's attention to the fact that he had not yet received the bonus of .‘ls per week granted to all workers as from the Ist of November, H>2ft. — The following motion was carried, on the motion of the Mayor and Cr. Coley: That, in view of the fact that the stoker’s wages were increased by lbs per week as from 20th September, 1920, it is regretted that his -application for the bonus of 3s per week cannot lie granted. Messrs Ross, Rough and Co. were granted a trau.-fer of lease of paddock from Mr W,-Petrie, subject to signing an undertaking to give notice of terminat ion of lease of .same prior to (he commencement, of .succeeding year's rent, or failing that, to undertake to pay full rent for such year.
BOROUGH FOREMAN'S REPORT
The Borough Foreman reported as follows: —During the past- month the road staff has bean engaged on the following works; Mixing asphalt in Couneil yard, grading footpath and laying asphalt in Pork Street, clearing between graves at cemetery, and general maintenance work. The asphalting of Park Street footpath will soon be completed, after which I intend to put in the concrete pipes at back of gas works. The drain will be low enough for us to do the work. 1 would suggest that a strip of concrete be laid in bed of drain, on which lo rest the pipes. It would serve the purpose better than planks. As soon as opportunity offers we shall proceed to asphalt the portion of load from top of Alain Street io end of frontage of Town Hull, Avenue
Rond. Cr. Bryant said works should be carried out as scheduled. The re-port-was adopted except that par-, tion dc ling with concrete supports for drain pipes, which was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.
