NEW YEARS’ DAY AT THE SEASIDE.
The ' glorious weather on New Year’s Day was responsible for a record attendance at the local seaside. .People came from Palmerston and adjoining towns per motor and train by the hundreds, . while all classes of vehicles were requisitioned to convey people from the outskirts of Foxton. The attendance easily constituted a record, roughly 5,000. Hundreds of people splashed about in the river along the foreshore, while numbers' of the more venturesome made their way to the ocean beach fora dip in the briney. The scene was an animated one, and the glorious sunshine attracted old and young to cool their tootsies in the water. The only shady spot was the belt of shelter trees at the snnitorium, where groups were to be seen in all directions, resting or partaking of refreshments. ■ There was an ample supply of fresh water from the'hall tanks to keep the billy boiling, for which the public is indebted to theftßeach Improvement Committee. There was no untoward incident to mar the day’s The only complaints heard were in reference to .sunburn —many young ladies had the embroidery pattern of blouse or camisole beautifully burnt into their skin.
The sporis organised by the Beach Committee provided an extra attraction. A double 100 yards track was roped off on the beach, enabling two races to be run at once, while an undisturbed view could be obtained by onlookers. Bunting displayed on the enclosure and about the, beach quite transformed the place. As the sports were for ihe young people, there was no scarcity of competitors; the officials were kept busy, and the whole programme went with a swing. As there were no entrance fees, large numbers contested the various events. The winners vote given a ticket which, when presented at the secretary’s office, was duly paid. The arrangements reflect great credit on the Sports Committee, Nearly £lB was paid out in prizes, and a gold modal was given by Mr King, of Palmerston North, I'ov the 100 yds. championship. The Salvation Army Band, assisted l>,v members of Ihe Foxton Borough Band, was" present, and helped to enliven the proceedings. A number of visitors to the seaside crossed the river, and many made a pilgrimage to the Hyderabad wreck, about eight or nine miles south of the river mouth. If the seaside continues to attract over increasing numbers during the holiday season, something will have to be done to provide better means of locomotion between the railway and the seaside, a distance oi: about three miles. Many families from Foil ding and Palmerston H. would gladly spend the day at this popular seaside resort, but the extra, expense in getting there from Foxton is the drawback, Perhaps the Beach Committee could submit the request! for an extension of the railway from Foxton to the seaside* to the authorities. This would have the unanimous backing of the Foxton, Palmerston and Feilding public. Failing this, the Manawatu County Council might consider the question. Quite a number of visitors indulged in fishing with drag nets along the river foreshore, and secure good hauls of flounders. Others, when the weather is favourable, venture over the bar for line fishing. Some good beds of pipis are established on the north ocean beach this year, and during the holidays Native* and pakehas alike have secured large quantities of .these shellfish. The beds are principally situated about a mile and a-quarter from the mouth of the river. ’ After theatre, dance or party take NAZOL. Prevents"* chill from changing atmospheres. Convenient for pocket or bag. 1/6 for 60 doses,
