The broaching of cargo on the Opawa when (he ship was on the high seas, was admitted by live members of the ship’s crew, who were brought before .Mr Poyuton, S.M., to-day. They were charged with the embezzlement of 31 rolls of cotton. 4 rolls of llanneletle, 2 boxes of soap, 48 tins of tobacco, ami 05 packets of cigarettes, valued at £SO. Chief Detective McMahon stated that the theft had been discovered by the ship’s officers, and they had made inquiries among the crew. The accused had owned uf>, with the result that they were turned over to the police on arrival at ports They were sentenced to throe months’ imprisonment, with a proviso that they be put on the ship when it sailed eventually from Mew Zealand.
