Sir. —He Levin-Greall'ord railway. When the Foxton Borough Council applied lo I lie Government For assistance to have a bridge built, ever the Manawatu River, we applied first For the Government to send ns a Government Kngineer to select a site For that purpose which he thought the most suitable From an engineering point oF view. There were three sites he inspected, Shannon and Whirokino Ferry sites, and a place where the telegraph wires used to eross.the Manawalu, nearly opposite the house where Jhe late Mr and Mrs Austin senr. and Family resided. Thai at the time was considered the best site, as by building’ a bridge there it would only require a Few chains oF embankment on the Foxlon side oF the river, and it would he (dear of:' the Iffghest floods ever known in the "Manawaf.it River, and the railway line. From there to Levin could he selected (dear ol: any Hood Water. How .1 know so much about it is .because I was Mayor of." Foxlon, and drove Mr Wilson, the Government engineer, to these various sites, but there was no Formed, or dedicated roads on the telegraph lo Levin From Ihe Manawalu. whereas there were roads Formed on the Whirokino site (selected), and on the Shannon route. —I am, etc., .1.
