RIFLE SHOOTING.

The triangular match between the Foxton, ITautere, ami Linton Rifle Clubs, !:ol(l last (Saturday, wasjmirred l>y the advent of steady rain at about half-past twelve, which, of course, entirely spoilt the day’s shooting. The 000 yards shoot was abandoned, amid keen- disappointment to all. It was mutually agreed to hold another match later on, when fine weather can be moye relied upon. . The Hautere team wore on the range at 30.40 a.m., Linton arriving soon after. The shoot at 300 yards commenced at about 11 o’clock, and was won by Hautere with a margin of 5 joints. Weather conditions in the morning were not good—an overcast sky, bright, changing light, and almost no wind, the latter a very unusual circumstance t'oi* the Foxton range. If there had been the usual westerly wind there is no doubt that the Foxton team would have made a much better showing. The scores at 300 yards were as follows: — Hautere. — : D. B. Maekersy 45, S. Waggery 43, W. Jepson 40, C. Strom 38, C. Jones 3G, A. Thomson 44, T. Taylor 42, P. Guy 39, F. Best 37; total,'4o7. Linton. — W. Kells 40, T. Edwards 43; G. Tremaine 42, A. Needham 38, H. Barlow 35, J. Gcuppth 44, G. Kells 43, W. Ball 41, C. Page 30, G. Newth 34; total, 402. Foxton. —A. Barnard 42, H. Mekegney 41, H. Frankland 39, C. Barnard 30, H. Hamer 34, J. Hartley 41, S. Head 40, C. Hand 38, J. Rider 34, C. Morgan 32; total, 377. At the conclusion of the shoot, the visitors adjourned to town, and were entertained to dinner at Mr Pen-can's. There being no prospect of the weather clearing, the visitors left for home soon afterwards. Next Saturday the second shoot for Mr Rider’s trophies will be held, at ranges of 200 and 500 yards.
