SUPPRESSING THE “BOOKIE.”
POLICE DISPLAYING ACTIVITY.
Practical effect, it appears, is now being given to the Gaining Amendment AH passed early during the present session of Parliament, which has for its object the elimination of the bookmaker from New Zealand. Some days ago instructions were sent out to members of the Police Force throughout the Dominion directing that the law must be enforced. The instructions slate, in effect, that the occupation of the bookmaker is unlawful wherever it is pursued, and, the police are to take measures accordingly. A Wellington contemporary says that on Wednesday the police in Wellington paid marked attention to hookmak-, ers and their establishments, and it is understood that as a result it was found very difficult to place a bet, though . this Avas not ‘impossible. Further developments are awaited with interest.
