SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of t he local Slate School Committee Avas held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Claris (secretary), W. Petrie, G. Coley, -Jno. Moss, A. Stevenson, M. Perreau, V. Mobinson, and the head teacher. Correspondence was read Horn the Borough Council re gift of gra.vel. Resolved to forward a letter of thanks for same. From the Board re screens. Resolved to have same erected. The Chairman reported re work being carried out to grounds, which Avas endorsed. Decided to expend £l2 on material for school games. A lengthy report Avas submitted by the visitors (Messrs Claris and Stevenson), which was adopted. The folloAving works were decided upon : Repairs to summer house, planting of creepers, etc 1 ., aiong rustic fence, painting front gates, erection of fence to divide girls' and boys’ playgrounds. Mr Coley to obtain estimate and report re levelling portion of girls’ playground. The Chairmans action ic erection of gales iu 'Duncan Street ■uid fixing fence along Cemetery boundary was endorsed. Hie Secretary Avas authorised to call lenders for sale and removal of tanks, -land and Avindmill. ,Mr Ross was ihanked for offering to fix improvements to bell. Deeicled to grant a school holiday next Friday (People’s 'Day at the Show). £l2 was allocated for school prices. The head teacher reported that the average attendances for the past four weeks were 329.7, 35(i, 375.9, 303.9, mumps and had Aveathcr Avere responsible for the loav average. Several members of the staff had been absent on account of sickness Specimens for the school museum Avere coming in freely, and Avere mueh appreciated. The inspectors’ report contained very commendatory references to the AA’ork done in the school. The inspectors’ reports Avere read and favourably commented on by the Committee. The head teacher was authorised to procure slunv case, as scheduled, for museum exhibits. Secretary was instructed to hurry up the order for library books. Decided to apply to Health Officer for exclusion of average attendance for last quarter, owing to prevalence of mumps and measles. Some discussion took place re the withholding of subsidies by tluj Board until after the work upon Avhich the subsidy was to be expended avu-s carried out. It was decided to communicate Avith the Board in .this connection. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Ross and’Robinson were appointed visitors for the month.
