KING OF BOOKMAKERS.
FORTUNE MADE BY A. FORMER BUTCHER’S BOY. Leeds (England). Mr Joseph Pickergill, one of the most prominent turf commission agents in Lancashire, has just died in Leeds. He rose from a butcher's buy to bo a wealthv man.
Mr Pickersgill opened Ins own .-'hop Avhilo still a youth, hut soon turned Ids attention to the turf. His cool judgment and htmiacss acumen stood him in such good stead that everything ho touched prospered, and he rapidly built up a substantia! connection, being known as a king among bookmakers. He Avas generally to be foufd standing near the entrance to the members’ enclosure, and Avilli a small notebook in ids hand conducted business in an unohlmsiA’c manner.
At one time Mr Pickersgill oAvncd several promising horses, and he had hopes of Avinning the St. Lcger. He was regarded in Leeds us being a man of vast Avcallh, and was one of the largest property oAvncrs in the city. His client* included most of the famous sportsmen in the country, and he did a good deal of business tor King EdAvard, who made a point of going out. of liis way to greet “the little man on the rails” at any race meeting he attended.
