THE FIRE BRIGADE.
A deputation from (ho Fire Bripule consisting of Messrs Permm and H. Hamer, waited on the Borough Conned at Monday night’s mooting and urged Iho Council to proceed with the erection of a lire station. They .also mentioned that the ladders and grappling irons recommended hy Superintendent Hugo had not yet come to hand, and asked that the same he obtained with as little delay as possible. ’The Council had suggested some time ago removing the fireball and if this were done they asked that it be re-erect-ed in the vicinity of the windmill in Avenue Road, where it would bo handy to give an alarm should a fire occur in that locality. They also recommended the Council to see that the lire extinguishers in the. Town Hall were in working order. The Mayor said that in the recent loan the sum of £7OO was provided for a lire station and in view of this it would not he advisable lo go to any great expense tor temporary accommodation. The question of ladders and grappling irons would receive immediate attention, CT Me Murray said (hat probably the outhouses saved from the Council Chambers lire could lie used to put the engine and material in. The Town Clerk said that the ladders were on order and that M? Hugo had recommended getting the grappling irons made locally, and as soon as the secretary of the Brigade had got a drawing of what was required these would he ordered. The question of temporary ac* commodatioii in which to house Ihe engine and material was left in tho bauds of CTs Hunt and Parkin with power to act-.
