PROVISION'S OR SECOND AMENDING MEASURE. AVeilington, Sepl. 23. The Marriages Amendment Mill (No. 2), introduced )»y Hon. Mr MacGregor in I lie Legislative Council, was read a first time. \\ lien Mr MacGregor moved that the second reading ho made I lie Order ol the Day tor to-morrow week, Hon. Mr Geddis said that he would adopt the unusual course of moving an amendment that the second reading he set down tor this day six month-. He said'that a spirit of religious intolerance and bigotry was spreading and there were graver issues before the country than the question of religious belief. Several points or order were raised, members saying they only hail the title before them, to which Hr Geddis replied that the Bill had been explained in the newspapers. Ultimately he agreed lo withdraw the amendment it the Council were insufficiently informed, but said he would return to the matter on the second reading. Members: Hear! hear! That is the proper time. The Bill provides that the Regis-trar-General is not to enter on the list, of official ministers — (a) The name of any bishop, priest, or minister of the Roman Catholic Church so long as the Nc Teraere Decree or Chapter 1 of the Decree of the Conned of Trent (referred to in the Ke Tcmere Decree), is in .force in New Zealand, (h) The name of any bishop, priest or’- minister of any church which by any articles of religion, confession of faitb, creed, or catechism, denies or questions, cither directly or by implication, the validity in any sense of. marriages solemnised in accordance with the ' provisions of tire Marriage Act.
