MYSTERIOUS DEATH.
SLEEPING SICKNESS SUSPECTED. A mysterious death omirrcd at the Lower Hutt on Saturday, a man named Percival John Cassell succumbing suddenly after a comparativelv brief illness, and the doctor who had attended him was unable to certify as to the cause of his demise. Ca»ell, who was only 24 years of age, experienced good health up till recently, and his medical adviser suggests the possibility that the deceased's death was due to sleeping sickness. This deadly malady, which has caused a number of deaths in New Zealand during the past few months, is an importation from the West Coast of Africa, where it frequently occurs among negroes. The disease is attributed to minute worms, and also another microscopic parasite found in the blood of a great number of affected persons.
