THE BUTTER POSITION.

NEW SCPPLIES COMING IN

The Committee dealing with the price of butter for the new season will resume its sittings to-day. In the meantime supplies available for retailing at Is 0d per pound are running low. There is plenty o( new season's butler coming into ,-tore. It is not at present for sale. What is now going out is last season’s make. There will be some good boxes for export on Imperial Government account, consisting, it is believed, of hut ter not usually sold as first grade in New Zealand. In consequence of the local demand having been satisfied from butter withdrawn from slocks held lor the Imperial Government, there has not been the call on the new season's make, lienee its accumulation. It is hatter worth 2s (id per pound on board ship, on the basis of the imperial Government's offer, Iml details of sale to (he imperial Government of tins ‘‘new” butter are not yet completed, so that this produce is in suspense, as it were. The supply of both butter and (dteese this season, so far as it lias gone, is below normal. This is due to the paucity of grass and its innutritions character at present, the result of unusually prolonged and heavy frosts. Provision for winter feeding was made on a normal production of grass which failed to materialise. Prospects for plenty of butter are, however, now assured. The price for local consumption is the matter now awaiting settlement.
