At last night’s meeting of the local School Committee a resolution was passed tendering the Committee’s appreciation of the work done at the school by the first assistant, Mr 11. F. Gabites, during the. absence through illness of the head teacher, Air Furrie. The Chairman said the double responsibility was undertaken by Air Gabites at a time when, according to medical advice, he should have been recuperating. The head teacher endorsed I lie Committee’s appreciation, and staled that he had written Air Gabites to this effect, and entered same in the Jog book. At last night’s Council meeting a letter was read from the poundkeeper, asking that the addition of another bedroom be made to the pound cottage, which at present only contains two bedrooms. He also asked that tt telephone be installed, as at present owners of stock were put to the inconvenience of having to visit the pound to ascertain if their stock was impounded or not, —It was decided to obtain alternate estimates of the cost of building a room lift, by 10ft. as a lean-to to the present structure, and as a detached building, same to be considered by the Finance Committee and a report to be submitted at the next monthly meeting of the Council, The application for the installation of a telephone received very short shift, Councillors being-of opinion that the convenience of people who allowed their stock to graze on the roads could not be considered, and this application was refused. Several pieces of furniture are advertised for sale.
Accounts amounting to £826 10s 4d were passed fur payment at last night’s meeting of (he Borough Couneil.
The united service will be held on Thursday evening next, at 8 o’clock, instead of this evening. Brigadier Toomer will conduct the service in the Salvation Army Hall.
The gas works stoker, Mr E. G-. Marlin, made application at last night’s Council meeting for an increase in wages from £4 10s Od to £5 per week. —The 'application was granted, to take effect from September 20th.
Senior Constable Woods has received notice of his transfer from Buxton. His successor will lie Constable H. Owen, of Ongaonga, HawIce’s Buy. Constable Woods will leave Buxton at the end of the present month.
When the local school, was burnt, a large number of specimens of interest were destroyed. The head teacher is endeavouring (o again establish a small museum in connection with the school, and will be pleased to receive specimens of inter-est-from residents.
The Horowhenua County Council is convening a meeting of delegates from the various local bodies in 1 lit' district, to be held at Levin on September 251 h, at 11 a.m., to consider the question of the formation of an Electric Bower Board to control (he supply of power from the Mangahao scheme to consumers in the district. At last night’s meeting, the Mayor and Crs. Pearson and Thompson were appointed to represent (he Buxton Borough Council at the conference.
Messrs K, L. Heath and -I. (Tore waited on the Borough Council at its meeting last night, with (he vogues! dial the gas main in Cured! Street should he extended so as to supply their residences with gas. They pointed out that they had to pav the gas rate, and could not gel the gas in their homes, whereas, on the other hand, residents in tin; Manawalu County, why did not pay any gas rate, were connected up. — After some discussion it was decided that the question of extending the gas main in Cured! and other streets he referred to the Has Committee, to report at next meeting of tlie Council. The Crime Minister has stated lhal a committee of the House will he set up this week to consider the price of hulter in Ihe local market, and make a reeoinmendaiion to the (iovernmenl. The committee, whatever its personnel may he. can scarcely avoid recommending an increase in the present maximum price of hulter, to have effect as soon as (he supply now held in the stores from last season is exhausted.
