FREIGHT ON HEMP
RECONSIDER A TION REFUSED. A question bad been given notice of by Air J. A. Nash (Palmerston North), asking for the reconsideration of the increase of the railway tariff-on hemp from 0s 8d plus 20 per cent, per 100 miles per ton, to 20s (id plus 20 per cent. As (here was no margin of profit, said the bon. member, some of the mills would have to close down. The Prime 'Minister replied that the question of the charge-on hemp was fully considered in connection with the recent revision of the rates. The increases on all classes of traffic were imposed with great reluctance. They were, however, imperatively necessary in order to enable the department to meet the increased expenses consequent on the advance in wages recently granted to members of the Railway staff. He quite appreciated the case as put up by the honourable member, but regretted that at present lie could not make any reduction in the railway charge on hemp.
