JUNIOR REP. MATCH
.MAN A'.VATU HEATS HOROWiiENUA.
It was (confidently expected locally that the llorowluyiua juniors would not have much dilliculty in scoring a win over the Manawatu juniors after their good showing against Wellington and Rangitikei, but the match played at Palmerston North on Saturday upset calculations, for the home team put up a ■good game and beat Horowhenua- to
the tune of 10 to 3. In the forward division. Horowhenua had the upper hand daring the first spell, andmade some slashing rushes which carried them to (he opposing goal line on several occasions, Eagle, Larsen, Howell ami M. Robinson being prominent. The “hookers, Larsen and McDonald, were successful in gelling a good deal of. the ball, but the back division failed io make the best of their opportunities. They opened promisingly,- and after the forwards had invaded Manawatu ground, a serum followed inside the quarter (lag. Wild passing hy Ifakaraia lost the advantage gained, but from another scrum Ncpia sent out again, and passing between Moses, Kauri and Hakaraia saw the latter go over. Horowhenua 3, Manawatu 1). A had mistake by (lie Horowhenua backs lei Manawatu through to the former's twenty-live.' 1 ami it was only hy the solid work of the forwards that trouble was averted. Play was eventually taken back to'neutral ground. The home team'Was now playing very much belter, and gave a taste of then’ quality in a breakaway that ended in a score. Loot, Solidt and Horsey put in a-capital passing run, and although the latter obviously look the hall offside, lie went over the line, and the scon 1 read 3 all. After lids the Horowhenua forwards redoubled their eliovis, Howell putling in a Hue run. and Eagle and Robinson led rushes up to the opposing line, hut failed to get across, though Manawatu yas forced on two or three occasions.' Just helorc half-lime, Nepia scut a pass to Kauri uu the blind side, and lie missed scoring by the narrowest of mar - gins. Mannwiilu had the advantage of a fresh breeze in the second hall, and with its assistance went into Horowhcmia ground at once. Their backs gave some glimpses of nice, ivippv passing, and- Horsey scored his second try, which was converted. Manawatu S, Horowhenua 3. Shortly afterwards Horowhenua was penalised, and Dodder landed a goal. Manawatu 11, Horowhenua 3. The home forwards were staying on better than Horowhenua at this stage, and went through with a solid rush, Fenton getting over and scoring. The try was converted, and the score was Hi to 3 in favour of Manawatu. Nicholsoirreplaced Nopia at half, the latter coming hack to three-quarter, and Moses went up to live-eighth. This change had little if any result, as the Horowheuua back division was still working unsmoothly. The opposing rearguard, on the other hand, wore_ showing clean, crisp and effective work, and every rush pul the visitors’ line in danger. Hunter replaced Ferenara, who retired hurt, and signalised" his appearance hy gelling into his stride at mice. He secured from a loose rush, and made tracks up Held, and when within striking distance sent on to Togo, though Hunter had a good chance himself of scoring. Togo, however, beat (he opposition and got across, but was brought hack at the instigation of the line umpire. • The whistle went shortly after, with Manawatu winning by 1(1 to 3. It should be stated that Horowhenua was without the services of Reid, Baker, or Porter in Hie hack division, which no doubt affected the combination. Nevertheless, ■ Manawatu was the belter team on the day, and deserved their win. SATURDAY’S SENIOR RESULTS. Kukn 0, Hui Mai 0. Shannon !), Tokomaru 5. THIRD GRADE. Manakau 8, Rovers (i.
