RED SHIELD CLUB.

TO CONTINUE IE PREMISES AVAILABLE.

A meeting of all interested in the above Club was held in rhe Salvation Army Hall last night for the purpose of deciding wind her the Club should continue or be disbanded. There was a small attendance. Paplain HI ford presided. Messrs Drown. Hornblow, Whibley and Perreau represented the Board of; Management, Major Macaulay representing headquarters staff of the Salvation Army, and Messrs Dev, Halliday, Jas. Boss and Prew the public. An apology, owing lo indisposition, was received from the secretary, Mr Tver. The balance-sheet, as adopted at the annual meeting', was discussed, which disclosed about £BO of assets over liabilities. Jl was explained that owing to the lire which destroyed a block of business premises in Main Street., that the Club premises had been given'up to provide accommodation for those who had suffered inconvenience by the lire, and further, that the Chib had. been not died that the premises would in any case be required for other purposes. Since then the < Hit!) had ceased operations for Jack of a, building, and the assets, consisting of a piano, and other furnishings, had been stored in the S.A. Hall. The liabilities consisted of rent and salary to Captain Collin. A discussion took place as to whether the Club was an adjunct of the Army. It was explained that according lo the rules, which have gone amissing, that the local S.A. officer was to he chairman of the inslilution, and that nothing was to bf introduced into the Club which con(iictcd with the Army principles, olherwise the control of the Club was in the hands of a Board of Management reproseifhtlive of the public It was further explained that cards or billiards would be barred from the Club.

Major Macauloy said Hie object of his visit was to ascertain whether suitable premises could be obtained. If it was decided to wind up the Club, the Army could not accept any assets which were contributed by Hie public tor any specific purposes, 'they could settle the liabilities out of assets, but tiny balance could not be placed lo Hie credit of the Army funds, it appeared to him (hat. as the Army had been responsible for renting Hie Club premises, they would be legally responsible for discharging that liability, and could possibly retain the assets against this liability, but they had no desire to retain any of the assets, and ho would prefer-the Club lo continue, if an assurance was forthcoming of assistance from Hie public. A motion to the effect that the Club be wound up and Hie assets and liabilities handed over to the A.rmy was lost in favour of an amendment that Hie Club continue if premises are available.

The Rev. Halliday staled that Hie Ministers’ Association were willing to assist the Club.

Mr Hornblow said that Captain Goftin had complained Unit the ministers had not evinced any active interest in Hie Club’s welfare.

Mr Halliday repudiated Ibis, and said that lie would sooner leave Eoxlon if he could not assist in any movement which had for its object the welfare of the youth of the town.

Major Macaulay said he would ascertain whether suitable premises could be obtained for the Club, and would confer in the meantime with the Commissioner, and would report to a later meeting. It was decided to adjourn tho meeting for a week.
