VATICAN AND DR. MANNIX.
FULL LIBERTY TO THE CLERGY
DISORDER OF ALL KINDS OPPOSED.
New York, August 7. The New York American’s Rome correspondent interviewed Cardinal Gasparri, the Papal secretary, who said; “The Holy See is opposed to violence.in any form, whether manifested verbally or bloodily. No cause, however good or holy, can be served by systematic breaking of the law and the murder of innocentpeople.” The Irish bishops on their own initiative have repeatedly appealed to the Sinn Feiners for moderation and a Christian spirit, but with scant success. It is not surprising that Dr. Alannix should have created such a stir in the United Stales, where the Irish element is so numerous. He has a handsome and engaging personality, and is gifted with impassioned eloquence. The Vatican has not; taken any steps to curb Dr. Mannix’s political utterances, and will continue to give full liberty to the bishops and clergy as long as they respect their religious duty. Ireland is not the only country where people are at loggerbeads. The same thing is happening in several newly-formed States, where the bishops and clergy are also taking a prominent' part in the struggle. The British Government, on the other hand, has adopted the purely precautionary measure of debarring Dr. Mannix from Ireland, as a landing there might lead to a renewal of riots and disorders. It is understood that Dr. Mannix will land at Liverpool and proceed straight to Rome, and report to thy . Holy Father there. There is no ' truth in the statement that when Air Balfour visited the Vatican be ask- '* ed the Pope to exert bis influence with the bishops and clergy to con--deinu the Sinn Fein movement. Air Balfour is too experienced a statesman to be guilty of such an error of judgment.” IS HE ON THE BALTIC? • London, August 7. Wireless messages sent to Archbishop Mannix from Dublin remain unanswered. It is believed that the authorities have prohibited communication with the Baltic. A story has gained credence at Cork that Dr. Alannix may not be on board the Baltic, but that while an impersonator at New York received homagyy aboard the Baltic, Dr. Manful’ by another steamer. ADMIRALTY’S PRECAUTIONS. London, August; (i. The Admiralty has ordered a strict watch on the South of Ireland, to prevent a lug approaching the Baltic and attempting to land Dr. ■ Alannix iii Ireland. Destroyers patrolling the south coast are in readiness to act. It is now suggested that the Baltic may be diverted to Southampton, in view of the police apprehension of disorders in Liverpool. London, August S. It is expected that the Baltic wilt be twenty-four hours late. The Daily Mail says Dr. Alannix will not be allowed to land at Liverpool, and there is a rumour that he ’ will be taken to Fishguard (in the south-west part of Wales). “PREPARE FOR DEATH!” London, August 7. Anti-Sinn Feiners have drawn a skull and crossbones on the church at Charleviile, Dr. Alannix’s birthplace, with the words; “We are after you. Prepare for death.” The Daily Alail says the Government has decided not to allow Dr. Alannix to land at Liverpool*.
