According lo remarks made by the Hon. Geildis, of Napier, in the Legislative Council to-day, practically every department ut the Public Service has its own bookmaker. There Avcre, he said, men on the pay roll of the State in Hie Railway Department, Telephone Department, and most other Departments, who were recognised bookmakers for their fellow workers. The same thing, he felt safe in saying, applied to nearly all factories in the countiy, Avhile he could also say that his remarks applied to tho Police Department. In one toAvn he could mention a sergeant of police who conducted prosecutions, Avas hand in glove with the gambling part of the community.
