BUTTER PRICES.
THE NEW ARRANGEMENT
Wellington, July 27,
Replying to Mr Field, in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Massey said that the present arrangement between the Imperial Government and the butter producers of New Zealand terminated at the end of this month. If it was not renewed, then the producer would be able to sell in the open market. If the price which is being offered is accepted, then the new arrangement would prevail. He understood that the producers would meet in Wellington in a few days, and all would be interested in learning what decision the producers would come to.
In a further reply to Dr. Newman, Mr Massey said that he would do his best to keep the price of butter down, but he was not going to do any injustice to the producers.
Dr. Newman: “I am not concerned about the producers; I am worrying about the consumer.’’ Mr Massey: “I have to worry about both, as I represent all parties in a matter of this Lind.” However, he hoped to be able to inake a statement on the question in the course of a few days.
