SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES ALL ROUND. The Postmaster-General announces that the following alterations of postage and telegraph charges will come into force on Ist August: — Letters and letter-cards, inland from lid for 4ozs. to 2d for 2ozs. Australia, United Kingdom, United States, and certain other countries, from lid to 2d. Late fee from Id to 2d. Packets (comprising commercial papers, hooks and printed papers, pattern and sample packets and unregistered magazines), inland, from Id for the first 2oz. and id for each additional 20z., to lid for each 4oz. up to 1 lb. Registered magazines, inland, Australia, Fiji, and certain islands in the Pacific, new rates 2d for each copy if not exceeding Boz., and 2d for each additional 8«z. or a fraction thereof.
Newspapers: Inland from Act to Id; fee for registration from 2d to 3d. Inland parcels from 4Ad to Od for the first lb. Fee for insurance of parcels inland, 2d to 3d, up to £2. Private letter-boxes, from £1 to £1 10s per annum. Private mail bags, £2 to £2 10s per annum. Money Orders: The new rates by post payable in New Zealand, Id each for £l, with a minimum of (id; payable beyond New Zealand, except in Australia and United States of America or Canada, Gd for each £1; payable in the United States of America and Canada, 5d for each 2s. By telegraph, payable in New Zealand, the same as by post, plus telegraph fee, Is Gd, if sent by ordinary telegram, or 3s if by urgent telegram. If payable in the United Kingdom, the same as by post plus cabling fee. Domestic orders, 9d each, including the delivery fee. Postal notes: The new commission of rates is, up to 2s Gd, Id; 3s to os, 2d; 20s, 3d. Inland ordinary telegrams; New rates on week days, Is for the first twelve words, and Id for each additional word. Urgent telegrams, double these rates. Sundays and public holidays, double the rates for week days. The registration of code addresses will increase from 10s to £1 per annum. From August Ist proximo, each telephone exchange subscriber in the Dominion is to pay an additional £1 per annum per connection, and there is to he imposed an increase of 5s per quarter mile for lines extending beyond the present maximum distances for ■which the initial rate is charged. The increase does not 'apply to current subscriptions due before August Ist proximo. Also the scale of charges for toll communications is raised as follows :—Up to twenty miles, G for the first three minutes, and 2d for each additional minute or fraction thereof; iq> to fifty miles, 9d and 3d; 75 miles, Is and 4d; 100 miles, Is Gd and Gd; 150 miles, 2s 3d and 9d; 200 miles, 3s and Is; 250 miles, 3s 9d and Is 3d; 300 miles, 4s Gd and Is Gd; 350 miles, 5s 3d and Is 9d; 400 miles, Gs and 2s; 450 miles, Gs 9d and 2s 3d; 500 miles, 7s Gd and 2s Gd. For communications from subscribers speaking from their own telephones, half these rates up to ten miles only. Night toll communications at half rates are to be available from 10 p.m., instead of 8 p.m.
