Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JULY 24, 1920. SHOPPING CENTRALISATION.
THE following paragraph appeared in yesterday’s N.Z. Times: —“At a .meeting at Eoxton of delegates from the various local bodies in‘the surrounding districts, a strong protest was made against the proposed centralisation of Palmerston North. It was pointed out that by such a move the adjacent districts would suffer considerably.” Some time ago the Palmerston Shopkeepers Association decided to endeavour to arrange for a suburban train service. The object of course, was to attract outside grist to the Palmerston mill. Quite a ligitimate enterprise. This aroused the opposition of district tradespeople, hence the conference. We have yet to learn, however, that the Conference acted on a mandate from the general public. Apart from that, however, the present railway time-table affords ample opportunity and time for people who desire to shop at Palmerston. The alternative to the centralisation scheme is for district tradespeople to publish a statement and convince the general public that it is in their interests to shop in their home towns, and keep the money circulating locally.
