SHAMROCK IV. WINS.

RESULT OF THIRD RACE,

EARLY LEAD SECURED,

New York, July 20,

The third race for the America Cup was Aron hy Sir Thomas Lipton’s yacht Shamrock IV., which Avon the first race as (he result of an accident to the American Cup defender, Resolute, Avhose throat halbards carried UAvay. (The second race could not be finished within the time limit). The course of the race was a reach to the south-south-east, a beat west-by-north, and a reach north-east-hy-north. The Shamrock’s starting time Avas 15min. 48,sec. past-noon, and the Resolute’s Iffmin. 2Gsec. past noon. The Shamrock had a difficulty Avitii her balloon-jib, and the. Resolute ■passed her to lee-Avard at 12.22. The Avind was light. The Shamrock’s sail-setting was bungled, and the Resolute slipped along smoothly, while her rival’s head-sails Avere not tilling well. At 12.50 the Resolute’s balloon-sail. was acting splendidly, and live minutes later the Shamrock was half a mile astern on the Aveather side:

At 1 pan. the Resolute lost the wind, and at 1.10 the Shamrock passed her to windward. At 1.25 she was leading by quarter of a mile. The breeze was then hauling' to the south.

At 1.45 the caught the first breath of the south-wester, and was half a mile ahead. The'Resolute picked up quarter of a mile, and went to starboard for the mark, then three miles away. At 2.2 the Shamrock followed suit, and turned the mark at 28 min. 28 sec. past 2. The Resolute turned the mark at 32 min. 41 sec. past 2. The little triangular forestaysail of the Shamrock was behaving wonderfully, and kept always full. At 3.15 the Shamrock' lead by nearly a mile. The second mark was turned by the Shamrock at 20 min. 29 sec. past 4, and by the Resolute at 43 min. 30 see. past 4. When the Shamrock turned, the Resolute was a mile astern, but she sailed fast to the mark, and was gaining, and a close race appeared probable. As the Shamrock was nearing the llnishing line,-a big hole appeared in her balloon jib. The Shamrock finished at 37 min. 58 sec. past 5. [The American Cup was won at Cowes in 1851, and Sir Thomas Lipton, following several other British yachlsJnen, has' been endeavouring ever since. 1899 to recover it, hitherto without success. On his previous attemptslie has been beaten in all three races of each series. As the Cup is won by two successes out of the three races, it presumably passes at last into his hands, and will have lo be challenged for by the United States, and raced for in British waters. Sir Thomas Lipton's first win,< however, was the result of an accident to the Resolute, and he is reported to have stated that if the defenders wished to call that race oil: he was willing to do so..]
