Bird) Bros., linkers, Palmerston North, were charged under I lie Sale of; Pood and Drugs Act with selling underweight loaves of bread, at the Palmerston S.M. Court yesterday. Evidence was given by -John Win. Huggins, inspector under the Act, (hal on dune ibii he visited the shop of Birch Bros,, and bought a 41b. loaf which, on being weighed, proved to be Jo/.. Tides, underweight. There were only three oilier loaves in Ihe shop al the lime, and these also proved-to be underweight.
Cross-examined by Mr Ougley, witness admitted that he had visited a number of other shops named, where the bread was found to be of the correct weight.
Mr Ougley admitted that the few loaves had been underweight, but this was practically unavoidable in the case of a few loaves. In baking, 4Mbs. of dough were pul into the tins to allow for loss of weight. Some loaves being at the back, received more cooking Ilian others, which made them slightly lighter, hut from the eustouter's, point of view it was heller to have the bread will eooked, ’even it it were slightly lighter. As indicating that shortweight loaves were a rare occurrence with this lirm, counsel pointed on! that all the other shops he had named, and where the inspector had admitted finding the bread at correct weight, wore supplied by Birch Bros. Defendants were convicted and fined £5 and costs t)s.
