About half-post six l; ono morning last month, Constable Holt surprised this man tampering with a locked case at one of Whit combe and Tombs 7 “island” windows in Queen Street, and despitp the explanation that lie was attending to (he firm’s business, the man was taken by the constable to the police station. From what was found on the man and was discovered subsequently at his lodg-ing-room, the police made a collection of goods, nearly all new goods, valued at just over £400.. Just on four weeks spent by Sergeant Dempsey and Constable Holt in finding owners for the property resulted in about sixty shopkeepers about file, city and suburbs identifying £2BO worth of millinery, drapery, jewellery and mercery, which had disappeared from their several shops during the past eighteen months. As a result von Einem had put against him 09 charges of theft of goods taken from various shops, etc., and valued at £278 3s 2d; on a charge of the theft of unidentified' goods valued at £lO4, and one charge of the theft of £2l worth of goods at Wellington. f The hearing of tjje eases occupied all day, and had not concluded when the Court adjourned.
