SCHOOL COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS.
AN important remit was passed by the .Federated Schools Committees at the Dominion Conference field at Wellington this week. The remit asks that the Education Act be amended closing nominations of candidates for election to school committees one week prior to the election, to apply to all committees of schools with a roll number of one hundred and over. The suggested amendment already applies to urban areas. The reason for this amendment is apparent to all who have been in attendance at school committee elections. At present, nominations of candidates are taken hp to 8 o’-cloc-k on the night 'of election. Tins method leads to a good deal of confusion, and does not afford householders an opportunity to weigh the merits of tile numerous candidates sprung on at the last minute. If the nominations closed a week before the election, the merits and qualifications of candidates would be carefully scrutinised in the interim, and householders afforded an opportunity to exercise an intelligent vote on the night of the election.
