A SUBSTITUTE FOR BENZINE.
THE shortage of benzine is referred to in the annual report of the Auckland Automobile Association, to be presented at the annual meeting. It is slated that despite optimism on the part of local agents regarding future supplies, oil combines in the United Stales have publicly advertised asking users to exercise the greatest economy. While the conditions were much improved, it was pointed out that the world’s demand was increasing so rapidly that a substitute' won hi have to be found within the next few years. With regard to local efforts to produce motor spirit the committee reported Hint the most promising of these were those operated by companies in Hie pent swamps of North Auckland. Crude oil had already been produced, and reports received indicated that a refined motor spirit would be available in commercial quantities as soon as (he necessary machinery for its production bad been in,stalled. The committee had decided in connection with the use of. benzine, to hold a petrol consumption con-’ test next La hour Day, with a view of properly testing the mileage of different cars, the efficiency of different brands, of petrol, and of various economisers on the market.
