SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

'flie monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was Held in tho ’school last night. Present : Messrs Hornblow (eaihrman), Claris (secretary), Alexander, Jno. Ross, IV. Petrie, Pcrreau, Stevenson, and the acting-head leached (Mr Gabitos). It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Air Currie, head master,, in his recent illness, and the wish was expressed that he would soon be restored to his usual, health. Correspondence was received from I lie Board re application for subsidies, and slating that subsidies could not be paid on certain articles listed. Resolved to refer the list to Air Furrie to report. It was decided that the secretary confer with Captain Coffin re purchase of two bugles and a side drum, and to "purchase same. The Board stated that it would instal gas at the school, and it was decided to have this pushed on as soon as possible, and to confer with the Committee as to where the point* should he. It was decided to ask the Board to suppl.v one or two fire extinguishers. It was decided to expend balance of subsidy on bell on improvements to front entrance. The Chairman’s action in communicating with the Board re blinds and healers was endorsed. Letters of thanks were* authorised to he sent to those who had made donations to the school library. The acting headmaster’s report for the month was read and adopted., j'he Chairman slated that the school was fortunate in having such a capable assistant on the .staff to carry on in the' absence of the head master. ■ A discussion took place in reference to a scheme for beautifying the front of the school. A plan of the scheme is to be prepared, and-when approved the work will lie gone, on with. Accounts were passed for payment, and Messrs Perreau and Stevenson were appointed visitors' for the month. The acting-headmaster, in his report, stated, inter alia, that “the term examinations were proceeded with, and completed under rather adverse conditions, but the hearty cooperation of*the staff has enabled us to tide over a strenuous fortnight. Sickness and bad weather have greatly affected the attendance, which was as under: —Week ending June 4th, roll 3.82, average 211.(I. June 11th 385 and 313.4, June 18th, 338 and 335.1$ June 25th, 388, 290; for quarter ending June 30th, 391 ancl 304.5. It was resolved to obtain a certificate from the Health Officer re epidemic during last quarter, in order that the average attendance should not interfere with the grade and capitation.
