MANAWATU GORGE.
TOLL-HATE WANTED. A deputation representimig the Manawalu Oorge Board of Control waited on the Minister for Public Works (Hon. J. 0. Coates) at Wellington yesterday, to suggest the establishment cf n toll-gate mi the Oorge Road. Mr J. A. Xash, M.P.. said (he local bodies concerned had decided to undertake a comprehensive scheme to widen (he road to 21ft., at a cost of £40,000, to eliminate the danger at present arising from the congestion of traffic, if a toll-gate were established to meet the capital cost it would obviate the necessity iif going to (he Government for money. The Minister said I lie SolicitorGeneral advised that the Board of Control had no power to erect the toll-gate. If legislation were introduced to empower the hoard to erect the toll-gate, Ihe apportionment of the revenue among the local bodies concerned to relieve them of expenditure on the road would have to be provided for in Ihe Bill or by regulations. He would lay before Cabinet the proposal for legislation to permit the erection of a toll-gate with the alternative of a £ for £ sulisid
