SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.

COUNCIL OPPOSED TO SAME.

At Monday night’s Council meeting the following remit from the Stratford Borough Council was con--idered: “That the Government he asked to take the necessary steps to make Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion.

Cr. Thompson moved that in connection with (he remit from the Stratford Borough Council this Council is of opinion that lor count i\ towns a Wednesday half-holiday is preferable to that proposed. Cr. Thompson said ho considered Wednesday was the best day for the smaller country towns, and unless thev received some request from the business people to have Hie halfholiday changed, lie did not think they should move in the matter. Cr. Walker,, in seconding the motion, said that the Wednesday halfholiday made a very acceptable break in the week’s work, Cr. Coley said that 'the law provided for a poll of the people in every community, and if a change was wanted those desiring same should take the necessary steps lo have a poll taken. The motion was carried.
