Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY JUNE 8, 1920. A LEGAL OPINION.

THE legal opinion obtained by the Education Board as the result of a letter by the headteacher to the Committee re the right of entry of a school committeeman on the school premises, ' was forwarded to the Committee at last night's meeting. The Committee did not desire the reading of the “opinion,” and it was “laid upon the table.” The Committee objected to the re-opening of a subject with which the public have been surfeited. The Act makes it quite clear that schools arc under the supervision of Committees, subject only to the Board, and committee men, representing the householders, cannot be denied the right of entry, provided the object of visitation is in the interests of the school. We do not think any committeeman would be so foolish as to visit a school with the object of disturbing class work or creating a disturbance. If such were the case, then he would become liable to prosecution. The Board’s action in obtaining a legal opinion was quite unnecessary, and a waste of public money. The line of demarcation between teaching staff and Committee is well denned by Act and Regulations, and so long.as each keeps within hounds there need lie no friction in the good government of I lie school.
