MONTHLY MEETING
The-monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Present-Grs. H. H. Hunt (in the chair), W. J. Phillips, W. E. Barber, H. Boyce and H. G. Hammond. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. W. S. Penny. Correspondence was dealt with from ' '
N.Z. Railways, forwarding paid on charges for tram, £SB 5s Bd. Palmerston N. Hospital Board, notifying that the Council’s levy for hospital and charitable aid. was £604 9s, capital expenditure £ll6 4s lOd, total £720 13s lOd. • Hawera Borough Council, asking support of resolution that Government remove the duty on children’s footwear. —Approved. * Stratford Borough Council, asking support be given to a resolution “That the Government take the necessary stops to' make Saturday the universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion.—-Received.
Mayor of Feilding, asking for an increase to £25 towards expenditure incurred with the Prince of Wales’ visit, owing to heavy expenditure owing to delayed visit. —Resolved to reply that the majority of the children went to Palmerston, and as framed photos, were being given each school the request could not be acceded to.
Bay of Islands County Council, asking' the Council to support legislation giving local bodies full power to enforce payment of rates by Maoris, or providing for the payment by the general Government. — ■Support to be accorded. .Secretary Rangiotu Farmers’ Union, offering £5 towards cost of improving road in front of Rangiotu hall, provided spoil was deposited in front of hall. —Crs. Boyce, Barber and the engineer to confer with members of the Union on Oth insl., at 10 o’clock.
Feilding.. District High School, asking the Council to assist in the higher education of country children. —-Received.
Several ratepayers in the Awahou riding, asking that Saunders’ road be metalled. —Cr. Barber and the engineer to meet ratepayers and discuss proposal to raise a loan.'
Foxton Branch of the Workers’ Education League, asking for donation towards funds. —£3 3s granted. A deputation, Mesdames E. IT. Crabb and A. A. Martin, waited on the Council in connection with the Willard Home in Palmerston North for destitute and orphan children. They asked for advice and financial assistance. More accommodation for destitute children was needed. The area was cam fined to the - Hospital district, and they wished assistance from local bodies. They intended establishing a, receiving home —dealing with three classes, infants. They would establish a cottage system similar to the Dr. Barnardo Homes. They also wanted a home for those children whoso parents were sick. Hitch cases were continually coming before them. And they also wished .to provide a home for those children who ,were ill-used. The speakers pointed out that where possible a charge would lie made for admission, and also that individual cots were provided. A donation of £25 would provide a cot for 12 months. On the motion of Cr. Barber, seconded by Cr. Phillips, a donation of £IOO was promised. The deputation expressed thanks, and withdrew.
It was resolved: — That the Connell purchase a 1lon truck with tipping gear. That (Crs. Phillips—Boyce), as accidents caused by collisions between motor ears and motor cycles and other vehicles are occurring at an alarming rate, a circular be sent to all County Councils asking them to assist in having .legislation passed which would give drastic powers to Magistrates dealing with motorists convicted of driving at excessive speed, or in such a way as to endanger the public. That Magistrates should have power to line up to £IOO in such cases, also that every driver of a motor vehicle must iuxve a drivers’ certificate before he be allowed to drive, and that Magistrates be given power to withdraw such license in eases where a conviction has--heeu entered.
That (Cr. Phillips —Hunt) inspectors be appointed to control motor traffic throughout the county, and take legal proceedings against all persons breaking county by-laws, such appointment to he# left in the hands of the Chairman.
